The helicopter in question is an Aerospatiale SA330 Puma. The pilot in question is French and if you have visited this site before, you probably know by now that if the words insane, helicopter, Puma and French are thrown in together it can only mean one thing: somewhere in Chad this French pilot had a very good time while at the same time entertaining the guys on the ground. Lucky guys!!! For the rest of us couch potatoes, well… at least we have one very impressive video with this truly crazy low level pass.
The French Air Force keeps a number of units in Chad. Because of the nature of the missions, the old Aerospatiale SA 330 Puma and Dassault Mirage F1 are stationed there. Pilots often call these “leisure missions” because they pretty much get to do stuff they wouldn’t normally do… like flying extremely low and generally having lots of fun. The French really do know how to make good videos. I’ve said this for quite a long time now. Anyway, check out these cool pilots and their Pumas doing some really crazy stuff over the deserts of Chad. That low pass over those three soldiers is really scary. I bet if I were in their shoes, I’d shit myself in fear. Enjoy!
Don’t really know much about this one. This Puma helicopter seems to have a tail rotor failure sending it in an uncontrolled spin… that’s what generally happens when you lose the tail rotor. Hope everybody made it out alive…
This is a former clip of the Aviation Légère de l’Armée de Terre - ALAT. The ALAT is one of the many Corps that form the French Army officially known as the Armée de Terre. The ALAT consists mainly of Gazelle and Puma helicopters and was established on 22 November 1954 for observation, reconnaissance, assault and supply duties.
These two Puma helicopters were trying to do a nice formation pass over the crowd. In terms of proximity, they were flying at the limit. And when they went beyond that limit, all hell broke loose. Their rotor blades collided sending both helicopters in uncontrolled spins to the ground.
Helicopters are fun to fly and these guys have probably the best job in the world. French Army Puma helicopters fly low and dirty in Tchad. It really doesn’t get any better than this. These guys are crazy!
